Match report U13 League Northwood 64-9 (18.2) beat Stanmore 51-6 (20) by 13 runs

On a sunny hot day Northwood won the toss and elected to bat. With the majority of our runs coming either from the opening 3 batsmen or the extras, we didn't get going with the bat. Manav (21) was the only person to get into double figures, alongside Mr Extras (20). Some poor shot selections for a couple of wickets and and poor running resulting in 4 run outs, all of which could have been avoided. Boys please listen to the call and remember whose call it is before deciding to turn or sending someone back. Three run outs were down to this. When running, sprint that first single and be ready to turn back for the next run. Also have a think about quick singles e.g. soft hands, play it and then run hard. Stanmore made a few runs stroking the ball, and getting that quick single. Other points to note are that if the ball has gone towards the boundary and the fielder hasn't got the ball yet, there is more than enough time to turn and make that second or third run. Its going to take some time for that ball to come in. With Kabir running late from a school match, it meant the batting order was shuffled and sadly we were 9 wickets down and end of innings before he could get there in time.

At the interval, the boys were down beat thinking the match was gone with Northwood 64ao. However a rallying speech and lots of encouragement sent the boys back out on a high.

Oh my, was the second half a joy to watch. We started off with fantastic bowling. Manav started us off with a wicket maiden and this was then followed by another maiden by Fayzaan. 2 overs, zero runs, 1 wicket. What a great start. By the end of the 5th over Stanmore were 6-2. The bowling was complemented with some tight fielding. Barring one or two momentary lapses of concentration this was probably one of the best performances in the field we have had. Good chasing down of the ball, throwing the ball in and backing up. Remember to also go as a partner retriever. Rahul C almost had a one handed catch of the season over his head but couldn't quite hold on to it from close range, however it did prevent a sure 4. Remember that when fielding on the boundary to start behind and walk in.

Boys you never gave up and kept going. This second half recovery and performance is one to make your coaches proud of you. Let's keep this up and translate some of it into the batting so we don't find ourselves under such tense pressure in future games.
