Broxbourne v Northwood Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 03 Sep 2011 at 12:30
Northwood Cricket Club Won

Match report Northwood Travelled to Broxbourne for the end of season show down. A win would keep them up and anything less would depend on County Hall Harpenden’s results. A full side on the morning was disrupted slightly by the withdrawal of fast bowler Jamie Lewis. Maverick had apparently got a touch of the old gout in his big toe which meant the big girl’s blouse could not play. Ram Nandiraju was drafted in to replace him.

Northwood lost the toss and Broxbourne elected to bat. Noachie, clothed in his climate gear opened from the hockey pitch end and soon had the ball zipping about. Stuart “Reevo” Reeve at the pavilion end was a revelation. He bowled within himself putting the ball in the right place with supreme control, something which has not been seen too regularly this season. Pressure from both ends told and Noachie got the first of his wickets, lbw on the full in front. First point. He then deceived Broxbourne’s dangerous opener caught by Ram at Mid On followed by yorking the number 4, Broxbourne 43-3.

It looked like he could go through them until Andy Sharland replaced Reevo and soon found his rhythm. He bowled the next two Broxbourne batsmen and celebrated in style. Noachie then got Broxbourne’s number 6 plum in front at the third time of asking, his last appeal being more of an exasperated child asking for an ice-cream “Oh please?”. Broxbourne’s youth policy came in at number 7 and played some nice shots before trying to dance down the wicket to Sharland only to be stumped by a mile by Steve Hussey. 109-7. Gobbo then requested to be moved to deep square leg as the ladies finished hockey on the next pitch. Perhaps he wanted to inform them of his legendary “status” but this was refused. The tail them wagged to get them up to 156 all out, Sharls taking a good caught and bowled (dropping a much easier one) followed by a caught behind and a final stumping of Broxbourne’s comedy act and left arm spinner. Sharls ended up with 6 for 60 in 14.4 overs but the star was Noachie who bowled for 26 overs unchanged taking 4 for a miserly 38. A monumental effort and key to the final result.

Unfortunately the last wicket was taken past the 3 hours and we were docked this last point at probably one minute past the deadline. This was a tad harsh as Broxbourne were extremely slow in the remaining overs, with mid pitch conferences and readjusting of equipment eating away at our time. Despite our pleas to the umpire this fell on deaf ears. At one point overs were also docked but this was straightened out before we went out to bat.

156 to chase to preserve our status and remain div 2.

Danny Rodgers and Tom Brockton opened up. Danny seemed to be in determined mood. The night before he had had a net on the bowling machine to ensure he was in the right frame of mind for the game. This proved the benefits of practice as he stroked three of the first over to the cover boundary followed by a two. 14-0 off one over is an excellent start but if did not stop there. Brockers was adjudged LBW and Nuss soon followed suit, bringing Sharls to the wicket. He also looked a million dollars as the two of them stroked around a 98 run partnership with Danny knocking off a chanceless 59 before becoming the third LBW of the innings, and Simon Noach, Mr Dependable joined Sharls to see Northwood home by 7 wickets. Sharls ending up on 58 not out and Noachie 10 not out.

30 points to Northwood and safe from relegation as County Hall also won leaving them on the same points as Northwood but having won fewer games. 6 wins no draws and 9 defeats (4 rained off). With that side every week and the application and sense of purpose we showed , we would have won a lot more games. It was a season of poor performances with the bat meaning little or no bonus points at times which put us in the relegation mix. Still there’s always next year… What’s the betting we have to beat Broxbourne again to stay up? I hope not! Beat them to gain promotion? There's a thought!

An excellent evening however after the game following a Hog Roast at Broxbourne by Karaoke a la Gobbo at Northwood. Sharls was very impressed with Broxbourne and suggested we turn Northwood into such a venue with facilities for hockey cricket tennis and squash courts. Lewis pointed out that we didnt quite have the room. One feels that Sharls would quite enjoy the plentiful supplies such a facility would provide him with and play a lot more games. Sounds a good idea to me!
