Northwood Cricket Club Won NCC got sweet 30 points

Match report Northchurch visited Ducks Hill road with a win essential for Northwood against a team just lower than us in the league. It was good to see everyone at the ground early to get the jobs done in time for a little stretching and a warm up before the game. The news was that Reggie had broken his little finger on his left hand last week. However, he still bravely played.
Noachie won the toss and elected to bat and Danny and Brockers proceeded to play some sumptuous shots for four but then proceeded to get bogged down as the Northchurch bowlers found their line and where to bowl on the track.

Brockers played on and Nuss soon came and went playing across the line to a short one which didn’t bounce much only to be given LBW. Nuss did a “Reggie” by listening to advice (from Danny) and then completely ignoring it. Noachie then joined Danny at the crease and he scored 50 with some elegant shots. Danny got stumped and Razzle also came and went before Rossco Noach joined his brother at the crease.

Rossco was on fire and looked in excellent touch. He consistently found the boundary, putting the spinner, who was bowling a leg stump line, in the spinney several times before sweeping him for 4 fours down to long leg finding the gap each time. Mace was unlucky to be given LBW appearing to be outside the line but Ash came in to spank a quickfire 30 looking in supreme form. Rossco was finally caught for 77 his first league 50 and Ash was out on the last ball of the 50 overs for 30 as Northwood had amassed 244-8.

Having stuffed our faces with a Jamie Lewis tea supervised by Reggie with the extra asbestos strength chilli sauce, we went out to field full of hope and hot chilli chicken. We had a good total and they looked understrength. However, one look towards London and the skies looked fearsome. We could hear the thunder and see the sheet lightning and wondered what gods Reggie had angered this week and we feared the weather could get the better of us.

Once it had been worked out that the quicker bowlers weren’t going to get anything out of it, he turned to his brother and Raj to spin the opposition out. In Rossco's first over brother Simon finally held onto one at first slip as a slashing drive at Ross’s third ball flew at pace to first slip. Simon hung on grimly to the ball and the first wicket fell. Northchurch’s young opener then tucked into Ross’s friendly full tosses, before Rossco slyly pitched one with which Mace stumped the guy as he followed round with his swing. Nimble stuff.

Raj then joined in the fun, catching their best bat LBW plum in front. He then bowled their number four and Ross ran out the next man at the bowler’s end with a crafty flick of the wrist. 5 down with the sky getting darker and darker and the light getting worse as Sauron was spotted walking round the boundary, looking for Gollum. He was in the middle spinning his precious web and responded with two more wickets, one bowled and one caught by Danny at Extra Cover.

Raj was bowling his customary no balls, slipping back into bad habits which seemed as though it might be costly. Northchurch’s number 8 came in and had one shot, the sweep. He connected a couple of times but then was bowled by Raj off a no ball. With the lightning crashing round us this was not a good time for Raj to be doing this as he may have ended up with more broken fingers from his team mates. Mace then convinced the guy to sweep again and he was bowled. Rossco got another LBW.

It was getting difficult to see by this time but the storm passed round us. Fielding with the thunder rumbling right above us is an interesting sensation. Reggie then bowled their number 11 but the umpire called it no ball. We were ready to thump Reggie as this seemed to be our last chance as you could hear the rain on the trees. A single was run and this got the number 11 on strike to Rossco. He pitched one across the bat who nicked it to Mace who clung on for the final wicket and celebrations all round.

A much deserved win for Northwood who outplayed Northchurch in almost all areas. A Michelle for Reggie with a broken finger. Reggie despite being more sober does this year does seem to be more accident prone. Anyway, man of the match Rossco for his 77 at an important time, coming in at 6, and 4 wickets including running out the non striker backing up. A much needed 30 points to Northwood and several jugs in the bar after.
