Northwood Cricket Club 1st XI v Broxbourne on Sat 15 Aug 2009 at 1:00
Northwood Cricket Club Won NCC got 30 sweet points

Match report
Northwood travelled to Broxbourne to take on a side several places above us. This was also Reggie’s first away trip driving his Saab which unfortunately had a few problems in the week with the brakes although thankfully all sorted out. The boys left Northwood full of hope and lost Reggie at Chorleywood. He was at least last seen pointing in the right direction. Sadly he had not realised that Broxbourne is about 20 minutes from his own house rather than an hour away from Northwood. Maybe travelling over to Northwood on Friday night wasn’t such a good idea.

It was nice to see other teams in a bit of disarray as the skipper for the day found that they had no balls. The usual skipper had the new balls at home and was away for the weekend. They found one but frantic phone calls to other clubs and cricket shops finally elicited a ball at about 3pm. Who knows what would have happened if there was no second new ball for us.

Anyway, Raj got there eventually with Gobbo and Jamie and soon the team was taking it in turns getting pints of water from the pole dancing barmaid. Gobbo vowed to have her phone number by the end of the day. Northwood reverted to what usually works, batting first on a wicket that promised bounce but was a bit two paced.. Nuss and Brockers took 1 and 2. Brockers was nursing a sore back from a football competition the day before where he was a goalie. Yes I know it is difficult to believe with the size of his hands but yes Brockers is a goalie. Nuss looked at ease with the accurate Broxbourne attack with Phillips looking particularly dangerous when he nipped it away from the left hander. Nuss however was adjudged LBW from a fierce ball that jagged back a long way. However, this brought Rossco to the crease and he played some sumptuous cuts and drives, although a little too much in the air. Noachie joined his brother after Brockers was bowled and the pair put on 40 for the next wicket.

Stewie had been promoted to the firsts. Whilst we all know where he wants to play, we all know where he should be playing and Noachie gave him his place at 5 as Rossco chipped one too many and was caught. Noachie also chipped one up and Steve Lewis joined Stewie at the crease. Both looked in imperious form, with Lewis driving as of old, and Stewie totally in control. Let’s hope his confidence is such that he can remain in the ones where he belongs (despite what he thinks!) The pair put on 60 for the 6th wicket before Lewis played on and Stewie was caught but not after a fine partnership that put us in a good position, maybe 20 too few but at 184 for 6, it was something to bowl at.

Broxbourne started assuredly but Noachie had Broxbourne’s left handed opener caught behind fishing and Jimbo caught Broxbourne’s assured opener LBW high on the front pad. Noachie then caught their number three more plumb in front than a plumb thing right in front of middle stump who nearly walked and Jim then bowled the number three with a viscous inswinger. 38 for 4 and Northwood in control.

However Broxbourne’s number 5 had other ideas and he and the number 6 put together a stand of 62. Gobbo wasn’t as accurate as usual, probably thinking about that pole dancer and got put away a few times, but Reggie was bowling well again. It has to be said that someone with so little parts of his body still working and to still be bowling as he does every week is no mean feat. Jimbo then caught a low diving catch at mid off to get rid of Glassberg for 27 off Reggie who then bowled the number 67 going for a hoike. Not the most elegant of strokes and Reggie celebrated before it hit the stumps. This brought skipper B Rosser to the crease at 100-6.This pair soon were well in control, taking runs probably where there shouldn’t have been and hitting the bad ball to the boundary. At 171-6 they looked to have won the game with 5 overs left.

Two moments of madness then swung the game in our favour. The pair decided to take two to The Colonel Sam at deep midwicket. The skipper came up a couple of yards short from an excellent throw by Sam. The skipper urged his partner then on 65 to continue the chase. Noachie then expertly realised Nuss at Long off and Jamie at extra cover was a bit silly bearing in mind Nuss’s huge throw. They swapped and the next over off Noachie Dawson on 66 decided to take on Jamie’s arm for two and was found wanting as Rossco happily took off the bails. 8 down with 14 needed in three overs. Noachie then disposed of number 10 first ball with an excellent off cutter and the final pair got down to 10 needed off the last two. The last pair took a quick single to Steve Lewis who aimed at the stumps and took the final wicket with a run out to rapturous celebrations.

This was an excellent game played in a good spirit against a good bunch of lads. We have had some previous ding dongs with Broxbourne but not this time, maybe due to a change in personnel… Anyway, well played Broxbourne. They went for it right to the end and it was only a couple of silly singles and some excellent throwing that by Jamie and Sam that changed the game. Well done the “second” team players, Steve and Stuart getting the necessary runs. Here’s to next week and 30 more points.

Reggie got James to drive home and Gobbo stayed behind at Broxbourne.
