West Herts III v Northwood Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 02 Jun 2012 at 1:00
Northwood Cricket Club Lost NCC got 4 points

Match report This year will be remembered for lots of stunning events; the Jubilee, Olympics, Euro 2012, even my birthday, but our game at West Herts proved to be anything but! After the highs of Boxmoor, expectation and self confidence had returned to the ranks!! We even arrived at the ground an hour in advance, which gave MacPie just enough time to recount the tale of his tons against the oppo and Dicko not quite enough time to give one of his rousing team talks!! The toss was won and like evey game this season we batted first on a slowish but steady wicket which but for the rain overnight would have been a good batting track. Ash was back from his life as an eternal student and opened the batting with MacPie. From the boundary we wondered whether this was the smallest adult opening partnership in the country, but no matter they both looked solid starting the run rate off at an eye watering 6 an over! Hence it was all the more of a blow, when Ash went to despatch a long hop, only to see it go vertical! MacPie, despite some characteristic flourishes, soon followed as did Mandar who was brimming with confidence after his splendid 39 last week. The run rate was now a paultry 2 an over so up stepped Hutch with some self assured drives which but for the saturated outfield would not have troubled him running between the wickets at all. It was a performance full of potential which got us back into the game, but this flame of hope was all too easily snuffed out with one drive too many!! Rumpers had been left 'floating' in the batting order, ready to respond to a situation just like this! Dicko gave the nod, and off he went to join Harpreet in the middle, who had enjoyed a few lusty blows and looked in good form. The oppo's bowling was nothing special, and after one of his legendary late cuts for four, Rumpers had settled, only to find that a outswinger starting ouside leg stump which was ready to be whipped away ended up caught by gully!!! Harpreet was looking so good, that talk on the boundary turned to his impressive innings of 70 in days gone by which had helped chase down a total of 240. Alas it was a familiar tale..... and it was not long before he had played too early on a drive and was caught at midwicket. After some extravagant carribean cuts by Dinesh, who ended up getting carried away by chasing a wide one, Reevo who had rolled back the years with his running between his wickets carried his bat with our total on 134, which was dissapointingly short of any batting points!!
Dinesh started the bowling well but the oppo's opening right hand soon had the measure of him and it was not long before the score read 50-0. Shameen at the other end, however, was proving to be much more of a handful, getting some extra lift from the pitch, with bowling that could have on any other day easily picked up 2 or 3 wickets. Ash will forgive me for saying that it was not his finest hour with the ball, and as he was despatched to most parts of the ground, heads dropped and shoulders sagged as a nighmarish 100-0 became a reality! Reevo made the break through, after a couple of fumbles, with his usual excellent flighted deliveries and after two more quick wickets, it was time for Rumpers to see what was cooking!! It took the oppo as long to get those 35 runs for victory as it did for them to get to 100. Saad did his best to look like he was never going to catch a mishit IPL maximum but held it none the less, ensuring 4 bowling points if nothing else. The oppo's tail was exposed which left us all the more frustrated that we had not managed even 40 more runs; a frustration which was vented by Harpreet in the changing rooms later when he gave 'a pull your socks up speech' worthy of any headmaster!! This result has left us, miraculously, in an unchanged position in the league but with one win out of four and us hovering perilously close above the danger zone, the time for words alone is over my friends, it is time for actions to speak louder!!
