Northwood Cricket Club 1st XI v Watford Town on Sat 02 Jun 2012 at 1:00
Northwood Cricket Club Lost NCC got 15 points

Match report Northwood faced their arch rivals Watford Town at Ducks Hill Road. Can’t remember ever playing them away. Watford had a changed team from last season, losing Neil Sen and their opening bowlers but had gained a seasoned campaigner Ahmed from Stevenage who used to play Pakistan A. Both teams were looking for their first win. Northwood were without James Lewis and with Noachie injured and not bowling whilst the batting looked strong the bowling was under strength.

Northwood won the toss and elected to bat first. Danny Rodgers looked in good form from the off and with Nuss at the other end put on 35 for the first wicket. Nuss was then adjudged LBW for an excellently crafted 5, the first of 8 LBWs in the day and Stuart Reeve came in at 3. Reevo played some sumptuous drives before again falling LBW. Danny was compiling a big score at the other end. Good job as wickets kept falling. Noachie found deep square leg from a rubbish long hop, Mace making his comeback hoping dearly that his wife doesn’t chop his bits off for playing again, was LBW sweeping off his glove outside the line of off stump, Swampy stumped running down the wicket, not what was required at that stage. Cameron looked in good form scoring 17 before being caught behind, Chuck was LBW missing off and missing leg, one of the few given that was out, Steve Hussey LBW on the full wide outside leg stump and then David Goodhew and Ram both caught for 0.

Luckily by this time Danny had scored 111 not out hitting some glorious boundaries. Some of the opposition said it was one of the best innings they had seen for some time. Northwood scored 185 all out in 44.5 overs giving Watford plenty of overs to bat.

Judy did one of her sumptuous teas again which is disappointing. One day we need her to do the teas and it rains so we can enjoy her delights fully.

Stuart Reeve opened with Ram and soon had Watford in trouble. The dangerous Mo Manzoor departed to a great catch by Noachie who plonked himself at first slip with his injury and full belly. Stuart then had the left hander LBW (no 6) in front as he played round a straight one to leave them 10 for 2. Ram bowled very tightly and Reevo used the ridge to full advantage. However, a partnership between Watford’s captain and their number 9 (the number in shiny gold on the back of his shirt, not his batting position and the most vocal of their fielders) was LBW to give Ram his first wicket. This brought Ahmed to the wicket who took the score with Knox to 126 for 4. Despite his injury Noachie bowled a few overs off a short run was lacking his usual control, but got rid of Ahmed caught behind by Stuss on a very sharp rising chance standing up. Steve is one of the few keepers anywhere that stands up without a helmet. Not bad at 50. Rodgers then bowled a few pies before Nuss came on with his slow stuff.

Prodger coming out of retirement showed he knew exactly how to work the field putting on 50 with Knox before Knox was caught by Cameron in the covers, and a 176 Watford started to wobble with the previously very vocal and noisy bench suddenly going quiet. Squeaky bum time!! Nuss dropped Prodger on a straightforward caught and bowled but Ram caught him at backward point. Nuss got Khaled Manzoor out LBW which was probably going over the top. Unfortunately, anything too short was punished and Watford got home for the loss of 7 wickets.

It was a disappointing result. Luckily Danny was on form but no one else helped him out. The batsmen must build innings and partnerships. Another 40 runs and we would have won that game. Having said that we weren’t helped by the umpires. 8 LBWs in the two innings, some of which a tad debatable. In the previous games this season we did not know they were there. And both teams soon got the idea that they were not givers and all appeals stopped. It is wrong but once you see that decisions are given, pressure is put on them to give more.

Still we got 15 points. Last season when we lost we only got 2 or 3 points. At least this season we have got more when we have lost and that illusive win is just around the corner.
