Cockfosters v Northwood Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 14 May 2011 at 1:00
Northwood Cricket Club Lost
Match report
Result: Lost
Northwood travelled to Cockfosters with a slightly weakened side due to 4 weddings and a stag do. With Ranjit Latchman and Steve Lewis filling in and Mike Kirman behind the stumps Northwood were always going to be up against it. We were also very pleased to see our old friend Dr David Webb donning the white coat…
Cockfosters won the toss and had no hesitation in inserting Northwood on a wicket which if you bowled in the right place did things. Skipper for the day in the absence of Goodspons opened with Brockers, who announced to the world on Facebook earlier that day if he didn’t get any runs on the road at Cockfosters or on the following day at Eton, then he needed shooting. As he played on for 5 having played a sumptuous drive through the covers, and on Sunday apparently failed again. One can only assume that the firing squad were busy at dawn on Monday morning.
Noachie and Stewie took on the score to 59 before Noachie got a snorter. Stewie looked at times in supreme form with some of his shots but at others wafted at the ball; in one over playing 5 expansive drives and not laying a bat on any of them. Nuss came and went caught at second slip but not walking, as he hit the ground at the same time and wasn’t quite sure what had happened. He was given out and walked off surprisingly to no chat. That must be a first in league cricket.
From then on things went from bad to worse with Aleem being run out whilst watching the umpire in front giving him not out from an LBW shout. Ranj then chased one trying to up the rate and Stewie was caught behind trying to withdraw the bat but it was too heavy to do so. Ali was LBW to one that didn’t get up and then Lewis father and son came and went with both being bowled by a rather innocuous off spin bowler. This sent ripples through the Northwood changing room.
We all know Mike Kirman needs at least 20 minutes notice before he is needed to bat as he has to get a mountain of kit off and then another mountain of kit on. He was caught out by the sudden collapse and had only just taken his shorts off when Jims was bowled first ball. Luckily Cockfosters didn’t invoke the timed out rule and waited patiently for Mike to get everything in place.
Perhaps they should have appealed because he and Ram put on 33 for the final wicket unbeaten batting out 15 overs, and in doing so showed more grit and determination than a lot of the rest of the team showed.
Noachie opened the bowling with Jims and both beat the bat without luck. However, with a score of 123 unless early wickets were taken we would not have a hope. In fact no wickets were taken. Not even a chance went to hand as the tall opener gave a display in correct patient simple batting, punishing the bad ball and defending the good one. Ram Aleem and finally Brockers all came on to bowl and despite some oohs and ahs and a howdoo from Ram, Cockfosters cantered home by 10 wickets and as they would have said later that evening, Northwood “Nul Points”.
Not the best day at the office but having said that, Cockfosters were a good team and we were short of several key players. With that attack and the two openers, they will be up there at the end of the season and with three wins out of three lie at the tope of the division. They were also a good traditional cricket team like us, with no sledging (although they didn’t need to) and a jug of beer in the changing room to drown our sorrows.
