Northwood Cricket Club 3rd XI v Boxmoor II on Sat 26 May 2012 at 1:00
Northwood Cricket Club Won NCC 30 points
Match report
After two poor defeats and amassing 6 points from those two games we needed to improve significantly and fortunately we did.
Dicko won the toss and decided to bat, displaying amazing confidence in a side that had scored 88 and 72 on the two previous Saturdays.
Dicko and Macpie opened the innings and things did not bode well when Macpie fell LBW for 3 in the second over. But fear not the sylph like figure of Mandar strode to the wicket and thirty overs later Northwood were 109 for 1. A good base on which to attain our target of 200 plus.
Dicko (33) fell to a top edge and Mandar (39) holed out a few overs later to mid wicket. At 121 for 3 we were still in good shape but new players Massod Ahmed (4) Dinesh Reddy (9) and Khurram (16) all came and went and we were 150 for 6. However some lusty blows from Reevo (26) and Dev Shah (24) got us past our 200 and we finished on 210 for 8 off 53.
Once again Extras proved to be our MVP contributing a fine 48. Extras has top scored in all our three games and currently averages 35!
Khurram and Shammi opened the bowling but in his 3rd over Shammi did his usual hamstring trick and had to be replaced by Reevo. Although not playing particularly well the Boxmoor openers made use of the short boundary on one side got to 72 off 16, well on target. But Dinesh, who had replaced, Khurram bowled their opener Hinton and Reevo captured the other opener an over later. Boxmoor never really recovered from that point and from needing only 4 an over their target quickly increased to 7 plus an over and with wickets falling, including two catches from young Chris Watson. Dinesh continued to bowl a very tidy spell ending with figures of 4 for 35 off 15. Masood who replaced Reevo at the other end picked up a wicket in his 6 over spell and Boxmoor were 167 for 8. With two overs to go with their skipper was looking very sound on 33 and clearly thought they had got themselves a draw.
Unknown to Boxmoor, however, they had fallen in to Dicko's cunning trap, Dinesh was replaced by Khurram who promptly removed their captain's off stump followed by 5 dot balls. For the last over Masood was replaced by Reevo at the other end and their number 10 stood to face Reevo. For some unimaginable reason he thought he could deposit Reevo in to the nearby field, fatal mistake, as he realised when throwing his bat away on a sad, for him, walk back to the pavillion. Boxmoor all out for 167.
A great result with nearly everyone contributing including four 3rd XI debutantes.
However there are some major concerns over the wicket, which must be one of the poorest in the League, and makes me wonder if we have made the right decision by using this ground this season. If Hatch End fail to make any improvements to this over the coming weeks then we must consider alteratives for the second half of the season.
Dicko
