Northwood Cricket Club 3rd XI v Little B. Sahibs on Sat 01 Sep 2012 at 12:30
Northwood Cricket Club Lost 6 pts
Match report
It's the season that feels like it never quite got going..... the season where rain soaked pitches meant the ball never quite seemed to come on to the bat..... the season where the 3rd XI were blighted by a home ground at Elstree... which is why we were all the more pleased when our great leader managed to arrange playing Little Berks Sahibs away! There was always going to be the obvious confusion about switching grounds midweek.... Macpie, for one, received a stern telling off from Dicko for not having read the very clear instruction that the match was now away on the website e-mail notification! Ten of us arrived at the ground by at least 12.23 for a 12.30 start, after Shameen had apparently woken in a different time zone and arrived 20 minutes late for the meet in his noddy car!!
On a perfectly pleasant summers day, our great leader lost the toss and we fielded. Reevo and Shamen opened on a pitch that saw the new ball rise off a good length but unfortunately despite this probing attack there were no early wickets. The outfield which required a little sheep shearing meant that the oppo had to run far more than they would have liked. That was until the first wicket went down, and their no. 3 came out all guns blazing and set about building a very handy total. Rumpers who cannot remember the last time he bowled in anger, was given the chance to outwit this runmaker with a cunning plan! Putting Mendelsohn back on the mid wicket boundary, and bowling a short juicy delivery, should do the trick.... the plan worked perfectly apart from the catch! The fact he scored over half their runs was something of a game changer! Despite a respectable three wickets each for Reevo and Kieran, the prospect of chasing 208 weighed heavily on our minds at tea!
It was not long before MacPie and Mendelsohn marched out, and Mendelsohn limped back in again after pulling a hamy! Rumpers showed how useful the bowling machine has been as he drove yet another quickie for four...he even had time to admire the ball as it trickled over the boundary! Unfortunately his joy was shortlived as he tried to cut the slowy on a ball which rose sharply, and slip gratefully accepted a gift! Credit must go to Robbie Reevo for a steady sensible innings with some splendid full bloodied boundaries In fact things were going so well, that up to the 35th over we were on course to surpass our target! However when Robbie was caught having tried to hit the ball into next week, the priority soon became about batting points rather than winning the game! Despite a valiant effort by Mendelsohn who came back with Hapreet, as a runner, the writing was on the wall! Not even Shameen who struck the ball sweetly for what seemed a certain six, but was deemed by Dicko from the pavilion to be a four, could get us to 140! Looking at the scorecard, you could call the oppo's bowling attack, the S&A Bowers show!! Every other wicket there was a Bowers..... strange but true!! Next week is our last league game in a season which has left us mid table in Division 10.... some would be perfectly happy with survival, others would be disappointed with coming up short of promotion.... if we all agree on the latter then we will not stop until we have reached our true potential [Division 8 for sure!!]
And lastly Mandar if you're reading this... all the very best with what we hope is a speedy recovery..... if I was in a confessional box right now, I would apologise for not having rung you [thank you Harpreet for that twinge of conscience!!].... but though you are out of sight, you are never far from my face....best I leave all the catches within a mile radius to you in future!!
