Knebworth Park II v Northwood Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 09 May 2009 at 1:00
Northwood Cricket Club Lost NCC got 17 points
Match report
Northwood fielded a slightly understrength side against Knebworth twos on Saturday. With no Danny Rodgers, hell raising in Jersey with Murph and his fellow stags (God help the Jersians), Brokers playing golf (tart) Raz at Rick Sellers wedding (fair enough. Congrats to the former opening bat). This brought Rouge and Nick Nick into the ones which as it turned out did not weaken the team that much.
KP won the toss and batted. Sadly the usually safe hands of Skipper Noachie dropped their cultured opener third ball. Again sadly, he was dropped on 30 by the even more usually safe hands of nick nick, the first drop catch in two seasons. How crucial they turned out to be as he scored a ton putting on 120 with their number three. Not the most stylish of knocks but effective. With Ex Chair Chris Rodgers lowering the gangers to give the outfield a severe number 1, everything that beat the bat went for four.
Stewie James Ram and Reggie all bowled well, but anything slightly wide or long hoppy went for 4. Or 6. Stewie bowled 11 overs for 37, and Jimbo 17 overs for 75. Ram got hit in his last few but miracle of miracles, Reggie did not bowl one no ball. Maybe that has something to do with him turning up sober and ready to play…
KP2s ended up with 230 for 7 as Stewie, Ram and James all took 2 wickets with one run out. They declared with 2 overs left.
In reply it wasn’t going to be Noachies day. The first ball to him was a wide but the second was a long hop which he hooked, unfortunately getting a top edge down to long leg where the young chap ran round the boundary and caught a one handed, left handed (his wrong hand) catch. He’ll never catch one like that again... That brought Robin Reeve to the crease, distant cousin of Stewart and Robert. He quickly showed his favourite shot, through midwicket as he and Nuss quickly accumulated 50 runs for the first wicket.
Nuss then tried to clear the infield but was caught at Mid off. This brought Mace to the wicket. He proceeded to punish anything short and wide including three shots straight to fielders, all of which were put down. KP cheated a bit by bringing a top class spinner, Richard Jerome, who some of the guys remember playing against when he was at Mill Hill Village, Reed, Letchworth, Reed, now Knebworth. More clubs than Jack Nicklaus. He’s quite a nice bloke so we didn’t mind playing too much. Until he came on to bowl. Nuss shrewdly told Reevo that he doesn’t turn it much, only to be proved quite quickly that he does.
Reevo was out lbw for 29, and Goodsponds joined Mace. Dave was a little put out that Mace managed to get dropped three times on not the most difficult of chances only for him to muller one to point where the one handed catcher of Noachie dived full length to his right to get rid on Spons on 20, in his usual quick manner! A couple of quick wickets with Rouge trying to sweep a straight one down to square leg and Stewie chipping one up to midwicket, left us tettering on 149-7 with Nick Nick and James Lewis at the crease.
What KP didn’t know was that Jimbo’s girlfriend had just turned up and keen to impress her (given her cricketing pedigree) proceeded to score some elegant runs. He and Nick put on 80 for the next wicket including a couple of big sixes, one off Jerome into the farm. Nick then hit one to long off, and Jerome then took a blinder at first slip to get rid of James.
Northwood needed 11 to win off two overs, not an impossible task with Ram and Reggie at the crease. A master Stroke from Noachie putting Reggie at 10 meant he was down the non strikers end with Ram facing. Ram told Reggie that the field was spread so take the singles and twos and piece of cake we would win. Reggie later denied hearing that. In one ear…nothing to stop it coming out the other.
Ram took a two then a single off Jerome, leaving Reggie on strike. There was an air of anticipation as Reggie took guard. However, there was only going to be one out come as Reggie’s off stump was knocked back as he tried to put one into the pond behind the car park.
Afterwards, Noachie said that it was a game that we played well, did some good things well and if only we could catch we probably could have had 30 points. The bowlers bowled well and some of the batters batted well. Catch the catches and we will be up there. And Reggie did not bowl one no ball. A cause for celebration.
The IPA was flowing well all night.
