Northwood Cricket Club 1st XI v Old Finchleians on Sat 16 May 2009 at 1:00
Northwood Cricket Club Won NCC got sweet 30 points
Match report
Northwood went to Old Finchelians with what was probably our strongest side on paper. Noachie lost the toss and we were inserted. Soon Danny was hitting the ball to all parts with full force. However, he struggled to get the strike and in frustration trying to hit OFs old spinner was stumped for 35. However the partnership with Brockers put on 57 for the first wicket in 14 overs so we were well ahead of the clock.
Unfortunately the next 50 runs took 20 overs and we were 107-4 in 36 overs. OFs two spinners bowled extremely well but Brockers seemed to get a bit bogged down and did not rotate the strike enough to get the batsmen who could hit it on strike. This led the rest of the batsmen to get on with things and unfortunately gave away their wickets in going for the big shots. There were 5 ducks all going for the big 6. Luckily Brockers hung around and got 60 not out. In the context of the game it was an excellent knock taking us to 132 all out.
We had seen what the pitch was doing and were sure that this was one of those low total games that we could win with the bowling we had. Reevo and Lewis opened the bowling and OFs were soon taking quick singles which we seemed powerless to stop! However, Reevo had the opener caught by Raz at second slip, and then Raj caught a screamer at mid on to his right. The surprise on the opener’s face was matched by that on Reggie’s! At this point, the umpire said that we were going to win the game.
The next partnership took the score up to 47 but we kept in there, keeping pressure on as we knew shots would be played. The next wicket though was one of those moments. I was there when…. Mace took what must be one of the best leg side stumpings standing up off Jamie Lewis. The ball was leg side with the batsmen pirouetting to hit it down to fine leg but the ball bounced high and Mace with all the grace of a pregnant gazelle snaffled the ball and took the bails off as the batsman came round in the swing. Out by a small margin but an excellent piece of work.
Mace then took the next catch off Lewis with the batsman reluctant to walk despite the barman hearing the nick with the windows closed. Robbo then came on to bowl and it looked as though it was going to be a good pitch for him. Unfortunately he was a bit rusty and got hit a little. Noachie then brought on Raj Latchman for Jamie. The ball was turning square as Raj got into his rhythm. He took the next wicket with as the umpire said “a classic bit of left arm spin bowling” He turned the first one, and then the next one was his straight non turning ball which got the batsman playing for the spin. Bowled. The umpire said that was a well planned wicket. I’ll leave that one to your imagination.
Raj bowled another unfortunate again playing for the spin and Mace took another stumping and a catch off Robbo. The ninth wicket was an LBW but then this brought the stubborn slow spin bowler to the crease who made it plain he wasn’t going to give his wicket away. All this time at the other end their number three who was sadly dropped in single figures was steadily picking up runs, holding the innings together. He got it wrong though by taking the offered single off the first ball of the over, exposing the other bat. Raj eventually tempted him into slashing at a wide one which hit Goodsponds at gully and which he caught at the second attempt. Celebrations all round for an excellent 30 points.
A good team never gives up and patience told. Some good catching and excellent glove work from Mace (2 stumpings and 2 catches) gave us the 30 points together with Brockers 60 not out. We should have scored more runs against a good spin attack but not one that was world beating.
Still having said that 30 points it 30 points! Roll on next week!
