Northwood Cricket Club 1st XI v Potters Bar II on Sat 01 Aug 2009 at 1:00

Match report
Northwood travelled up to Potters Bar on Saturday to face a strong Potters Bar Second team who belied their one place below us with Danny Rodgers and Tom Brockton returning to the side. Noachie was also fit again after is sciatic nerve problems of the week before. The forecast wasn’t good with heavy rain predicted during the afternoon.
PB won the toss and after consultation with his teammates, the skipper put us in. Brockton was soon on his way but this brought Nuss to the wicket in what proved to be a fruitful partnership with Danny Rodgers. Danny took a liking to the wicket which had lots of pace and bounce and anything short or full was punished. However, the PB fielders would come to rue the three dropped catches during his innings as Danny finished on 102 before heaving across the line. The partnership had put on a valuable 160.
Nuss then succumbed to an LBW decision on 46 which brought Rossco to the wicket to join his brother Simon. Sadly the middle order failed to wag. Rossco again fell victim to his favourite shot getting bowled and has yet to fathom why he keeps getting out to that shot. Don’t play it!! Steve Hussey was caught first ball and The Colonel and Jimbo soon followed without troubling the scorers much, if at all. Reece Kirk put together a partnership led by Noachie who scored 25. Rob Reeve superbly and elegantly stroked the shot of the day through mid off for the last ball as Northwood declared on 225 for 9 in the 53 overs.
PB had bowled quite tightly especially in the later overs. Danny punished anything loose but the PB fielders would feel that they should have had him for about 30 as a couple of the drops were pretty awful. However, usually a good total to defend although probably 40 short of where it should have been.
Still it wasn’t raining. Yet.
Mindful of the weather, PB went off like a train. Jimbo went for 30 in three overs, most of it through fourth slip (needed a third man) and Reggie was also whacked about. PBs running between the wickets was superb taking twos to fielders where there should not have been 2. However, they tried it on once too often as Brockers not famed for his long through threw to Reggie at the bowler’s end as Breeze sent back his partner, only for Reggie to actually catch it and run out the batsmen. How unlucky was that!
By now it was raining and we played on until it got heavy. We went off and the cover came on. Breeze was quickly rushing towards his ton and quite understandably PB were eager to get out again. It was also getting very dark but we went out again and Reggie bowled their young number 3. Brockers replaced Rossco who was struggling with the wet ball and Brockers replaced him. Stuss made up for his dismal knock to excellently stump Breeze down the leg side for well crafted 106. Worth his match fee alone. Reece then caught one at long on, before it started to rain again. PB’s batsman walked all the way to the middle as we came off for the rain. No way could we play in the rain, nor should we be expected to. It eased off slightly but the black clouds were approaching and before long it was torrential to call a close to the game.
Whilst we understand PBs wish to get out there and play and no doubt get the win they would probably have done, the conditions were pretty atrocious at the end. If the tables were reversed we would probably want to go out for the 30 points, although hopefully that common sense would prevail.
