Northwood Cricket Club 1st XI v Watford Town on Sat 08 Aug 2009 at 1:00
Northwood Cricket Club Lost NCC got 5 points
Match report
The air of anticipation at Northwood was electric. Reggie had apparently passed his test and rumours abounded in the club that he was going to arrive in a bright orange Robin Reliant. Sadly we were disappointed as the Orange Man turned up on the Friday for a few beers, a curry and some Sambuca with the Northwood Hills locals, as part of his usual pre match ritual.
Watford Town were the visitors to NCC and for the first time this year Noachie inserted the opposition on a track that looked damp still from Thursday’s downpour. Watford were soon in trouble with Manzoor being caught at second slip in a diving catch by Raz. Just prior to that, Noachie was the unluckiest man on the pitch and Neil Sen the luckiest as in one over, he was dropped by Nuss at Gully with a difficult one handed catch, Razzle then dropped what he called the easiest chance he has ever dropped before, followed by almost playing on, followed finally by one of Noachie’s long loud imploring appears that Dr David Webb turned down, one of a number of appeals turned down, much to Noachie’s annoyance. At least he was consistent.
Noachie soon got revenge and caught Sen at first slip off Lewis then bowled their overseas. There then followed a series of players some of whom who would struggle to get into our seconds or thirds . Raj came on along with Rossco, with Nuss getting a couple of catches and Razzle making up for his horrendous miss with three catches at slip and a slow motion stumping from Stuss. Mo Manzoor came in to whack a quick 32 before falling into the trap of trying to whack everything out of the ground. Eventually he would be caught and was by Danny who caught his first catch in the deep for some time.
Now 8 wickets down, we allowed them to get away from us a little. Their number 9 somehow whacked 21 whilst the number 11 blocked away and from under 100 they got to 137 all out which turned out to be very crucial.
Northwood then batted. Town turned to spin having seen how Raj and Ross were turning the ball. Danny Rodgers was adjudged LBW. Bearing in mind this was, on a turner of a wicket, a left arm over to a right hander turning it away from the batsman who was sweeping the ball a long way down the wicket on the front foot, it is difficult to see how anyone could be sure it was going to hit the stumps. Pitching on it would turn away, outside leg, not out.
Manzoor was also turning it prodigiously at the other end and bowled Nuss neck and crop round his legs. Something to work on there. Noachie dug in and Rossco hung around for 19 until Rossco played on and Noachie was caught in the slips. Razzle’s glandular fever had taken its toll and was plum in front.
Stuss then proved that he is still a good player by hanging around and watching the ball onto the bat or padding up and hitting the bad ball away. He looked in no trouble at all and had to choose between attack and defence as wickets fell around him. Northwood did not seem to have a plan although some of the lower order tried to whack their way out of it. Stuss hung on for 21 not out as all around him perished in a flurry of shots and Northwood were all out for 90.
Both bowlers for Watford bowled through and took 5 a piece. However they were not world beaters and we all got ourselves out to some degree. The top order probably too defensive without a plan of where to score runs and rotate the strike and the lower order tried to salvage the situation under orders by trying to hit our way out of it. Sadly neither went right.
Big game this week. 30 points is needed to put a bit of distance between us and the lower reaches. Come on!!!
