Northwood Cricket Club 1st XI v Cockfosters on Sat 29 Aug 2009 at 1:00
Northwood Cricket Club Lost NCC got 3 points
Match report
A weakened Northwood 1st XI travelled to high flying Cockfosters looking to continue their recent good run in the league. Losing the toss and being invited to bat Northwood opened with the in form pair of Brockers and Rossco Noach. Unfortunately Rossco was gunned LBW off the first ball of the 2nd over with a delivery that he not only smashed into his pad but which was also unlikely to be hitting the sumps, 3-1, not the best start!
Raz Wise joined Brockers and they progressed the score to 30 off 10 overs in the face of what was some pretty tight bowling from the home side. The occasional ball misbehaved quite violently, Brockers being dropped at short leg with one that popped from full off a length off the Cockfosters overseas. Raz was caught behind (although there was some doubt over the legality of the catch by the home side's keeper) and Brockers was LBW on the front foot (outside the line and going down). This left Northwood in a precarious position, but captain Noach looked in good touch and despatched a few short deliveries over mid wicket with ease.
He was joined by Paul "Gobbo" Richardson and the pair added 35 to progress the score to 65-3 before Richardson was caught and bowled. Noach continued to play with gay abandon looking to score whenever possible and hitting a number of rasping drives through the covers. Noach reached his 50 at a run-a-ball and went on to score 65 before being stumped. However he received little support form the NCC lower order, with the exception of Ronnie Patel who hung around for almost 10 overs with Noach. NCC all out for 119.
Skipper Noach and Reggie Latchman (needing 2 wickets for his 100 for the season) opened the bowling knowing early wickets were essential if NCC had any hope of defending such a small total. Alas, after 12 overs the home side had progressed to 39-0 and Rossco Noach was brought into the attack and nearly claimed a wicket in his first over, a loose drive just evading Ronnie Patel at mid-off. Reggie had the Cockfosters opener caught by Rossco and Gobbo, fresh into the attack sent back the hard hitting no3 for 8 and when Reggie claimed the prize scalp of the Cockfosters skipper for 33, clean bowled playing back to a fuller/quicker delivery NCC thought they were in with a sniff - the home side 75-3. However this was to be NCC's last success with the ball as Cockfosters "Mr Pretentious" strode to the crease with a swagger last seen being exhibited by Sir Ian Botham way back in 1992. He looked all a sea vs Reggie initially, but then got his eye in and despatched a number of lusty blows over cow corner and straight back over Reggie's head for 6 to win the game in fine style.
As deserved win for Cockfosters - by 7 wickets and with plenty of overs to spare.
The 1st XI's only consolation was a congratulatory beer for Reggie for his 100th wicket of the season. A fantastic achievement from our Benjamin Button lookalike left armer.
Final league game next weekend vs Kings Langley - lets finish the season on a high with 30 points!
