Northwood Cricket Club 1st XI v Hertford II on Sat 22 Aug 2020 at 12.00
Northwood Cricket Club Won
Match report
The most amazing finish to a game at Northwood for a long time.
Chasing 113, Hertford II kept losing wickets in stages, and at 55 for 5 the game was balanced with it only needing 1 person to take charge and win it for either team. At 74-6, Skipper B.Orchard, joined keeper R.Wood and the pair looked comfortable against the NCC spin attack, defending well and taking advantage of loose balls and rotating the strike. NCC were staying positive and encouraging throughout but with the score ticking over 100 something had to happen soon. The ending seemed set, Hertford II players getting louder starting to sense victory and lining up on the boundary, Northwood players thinking what could have been, so close but yet so far. The score now ticking 105, 106, 107, 108. Six to win. Then Sabarish brought back into the attack and with 6 to win Orchard went for the hero's finish by putting the ball into the road, charging down but only managing to get a feather edge which Ross caught but followed up with the stumping just to make sure. Experienced heads getting us together knowing 2 colts were in their bottom 3 suggested that this game might not be over yet.
Next over Johnny Baron against the settled Wood, 3 dot balls were then followed by a square cut which was destined for four, but like a salmon Danny, produced the fielding moment of the season, leaping to his right, horizontal in the air, winding himself and cutting finger, one handed stop and throw preventing one let alone four. (We hope the finger survived Dan). This proved crucial as next ball Johnny bowled Wood, 2 wickets fallen and still 6 runs required. 9 and 10 at the crease, volume in the field was by now high and both batsmen looked like they didn't want to be in this situation and 10 minutes previous would never have thought they would be. Johnny, around the wicket with the last ball of the over, to the left handed no.10 bowled one which got a small inside edge straight onto middle stump, 2 in 2 balls and third wicket to fall on 108.
Experienced Rhodes came in at 11 but was at the non strikers end leaving youngster Osborn to face Sab, a little chat between the bats about keeping calm, 6 runs in 16 overs to get, don't listen to what the fielders were saying didn't have its effect as Osborn drove Sab straight down Johnny's throat at Mid off to secure one of the most unlikeliest of wins. Cue the wildest of celebrations on the field and with a 4.30pm finish a long night of celebrating off the field.
