Northwood Cricket Club 1st XI v Welwyn G. City II on Sat 25 Jun 2011 at 1:00
Northwood Cricket Club Lost

Match report
Result: Lost

Northwood faced Welwyn in an important game against the side just above them. Due to the rain the night before the pitch was a green top which promised to do a bit. However, it seemed to do a lot more second innings than the first. Welwyn won the toss and elected to bat first. Northwood had to start with 9 men as Ali Khan and Umar Khan did not turn up until 20 mins into the game.

However that didn’t seem to make much odds as Northwood’s bowling was tight with Simon Noach and Jims Lewis giving the openers nothing to hit and at 68 for 1 at the halfway stage things were looking very good. The one wicket taken was a superb one handed diving catch by Danny the cat Rodgers as Lewis got one to nip away from the opener, and with Raz standing up, Rodgers did well to get down so quick. You might have thought that would have inspired the rest of the team but unfortunately the catching from then went downhill. Danny turned into Calamity Jane as spilled two and nearly did the splits on the wet wicket and Reevo dropped a simple chance at Extra Cover which seemed to prey on his mind the rest of the game.

Ali Khan showed us how to catch with two good catches at mid off and mid on and Nuss caught Welwyn’s number 4 on a high catch that dipped in front of him. Ram bowled very well but was hit by their no 4 for several 6s. Take those out and his 2 for 62 off 17 was an excellent spell.

Welwyn reached 209 for 6 in the 53, probably 50 or so more than they should have got on that wicket. Some terrible dropped catches put the team’s collective head down.

In reply Danny Rodgers and Ali Khan got us off to a good start against the young opening attack for 53 for the first wicket. However, Welwyn then brought on their old timers Stainsby and Bridgewater who know how to bowl on a drying wicket and they took us to the cleaners, taking Danny and Ali in the same over. Nuss tried to get going but was out caught in the slips, and Reevo still was thinking about that dropped catch as he lifted one to mid off. Noachie was caught round the corner off one that lifted off Bridgewater, and Raz caught behind, skipper David Goodhew caught square leg and Jims harshly adjudged LBW off Stainsby just above the pad, his previous chat to the umpire probably paying dividends there. Brockton caught behind off the young seamer who came back on after a good rearguard action and Ram LBW off a full toss leaving Umar Khan looking comfortable not out 1.

Not a good day at the office against a side close to us in the table. Maybe the next thing on our shopping list should be some covers although you can’t blame the wicket entirely. Some good cricketing nous from Welwyn and Stainsby does us again
