Match report U17 Friendly Northwood U17 140-3 (20) beat OMT U15 73-4 (20) by 67 runs
The talented under 17 group got their season up and running with a comprehensive pre-season win against a young OMT. Ben looked in good form with a steady 38 and Kabir, after a slow start, accelerated with some crowd-pleasing flourishes to make 52*. Charlie showed by far the most intent in a late cameo. Sab was the pick of the bowlers, although Gurman continued his fine start to the season and Jashan’s over also deserves mention. It was good to see the return of Aryan, Manav and Mughi. James held a good catch and ran things well
There will be some tough opponents, remembering we will often be the younger side, and focused practice is highly recommended. And weekend cricket of course!!
Some things to work on below. Written in the context of a very capable group, wanting to make the most of their ability and push each other

  • Intent in batting trying to score off 4-5 balls an over not 3-4. Hard hit drives straight to mid off look nice but score no runs. Doing it ball after ball wont lead to different outcomes. No leaves!
  • Intent running, running when there is a 5% chance of a runout. Judging the fielders, on that outfield and with that under 15 opposition there was a clear run on every throw from the outfield. Might be different if playing against a county under 17
  • We need to trust in our ability, if we are good enough to play innovative shots on 50 we are usually good enough to play them on 20. And we have multiple capable batsmen ready to come in
  • Obviously wides although no one bowls them on purpose. Do we know why we bowled wides (action /run up etc)
  • Staying fully alert in field – backing up, communication, not hurling at stumps when batter half down wicket.
  • Fiedling positions for different bowlers, eg likely to go fine to third man off quicker bowler, squarer for slower bowlers. Depth of slips for different bowlers. This doesn’t all come from the captain, and the keeper has a key role too
