Match report U13 League Northwood 114-10 (16.1) beat Harrow St Marys 105-10 (19.5) by 9 runs

This was a great game that kept spectators interest from start to finish. Batting first, we soon encountered the advertised HSM danger man who was very fast and very impressive from the off. While he did claim 4 early scalps, at least our boys got in line – definitely the top bowler faced so far. As ever, much rested on Kabir’s shoulders and he led a spirited counter-attack. We just needed someone to stick with him but despite having talked about pushing their left arm spinner into the gaps, further batsmen perished in search of boundaries. Finally it was Rahul who batted with application to get our score up towards 100 with extras contributing freely as well. Kabir finally departed for a buccaneering boundary-filled 43. The crowd were then treated to a trademark Fayzaan cameo with one six sailing out of the ground into Lohana CC. However, disappointingly we were all out in the 17th over when 3 more overs of steady progress would have given an imposing 130+ total.

In the field, however, our bowling, fielding, energy and concentration were by some way the best seen this season. Fayzaan found both line and length and bowled their Middx player in the first over as part of a great spell. Manav bowled beautifully, taking 2-6, with HSM content to block out his 2nd spell and Ben produced a crucial first over which removed their opener and their dangerous W/K. Charlie continued his rapid improvement as an offspinner bowling a great line and pace taking 3-17. With the other bowlers contributing and William, having badly hurt his ankle batting making some heroic stops in the field which lifted the others, we were on top throughout. Some spirited late-order HSM resistance and some slackening of the intensity in the field (one comic moment when Fayzaan and Raj seemed to be conducting.their own mid-match fielding drill while the HSM batsmen kept running) kept HSM with a glimmer of victory but 15 in the last over proved well beyond them.

Very well done to all the boys but learning points to note:

  • When scoring at 6 an over, we must resist the temptation to try and smash good balls for boundaries.

  • Before the game we had discussed 2 known HSM threatening bowlers and after a couple of balls it was clear they were very dangerous. Even if we score 20 runs off their 8 overs, if we maintain wickets in hand that still leaves 72 balls (+wide/no ball) to score off the other bowlers.

  • Still far too many wides and noballs : 21 (would have been 42 with no rebowl!)

  • We did collectively lose energy between overs 5 and 10 or so in the field. Wickets are great, but quiet overs with few boundaries are fine too.
