Northwood Cricket Club 5th XI v Rickmansworth IV on Sat 03 Jun 2023 at 1pm
Northwood Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
NCC 5th XI v Rickmansworth 4th XI
On the back of two hard fought victories, NCC 5th XI took to the stage at Little Missenden for the first time this season, with the opportunity to record a hat trick of wins for the first time in history. The opposition was Rickmansworth 4th XI, currently topping the league.
Confidence was as strong as the sun, beating down on the cloudless day, even with the news that, due to a late drop out elsewhere, there would be only 10 players available. (9.5 if you include the brave soldier Praveen, who was playing with two broken fingers)
Having lost the toss, NCC were put in to the field. A tight opening spell from Chris included a C&B which looked suspiciously like a bump ball. As he turned to take his third ball, he noticed the batsman had walked, so Chris conceded that it was of course a clean catch and was never in doubt. At the other end the heroic Praveen opened for the first time, taking a wicket in his 5th over due to a great one handed take behind the stumps from the ever dependable Mandar.
Prasathan Bowled with good pace and Saurabh displayed a wonderfully consistent accuracy to record fantastic figures of 8/3/13/1. Then came the pairing of Manan and Rahul, which was very effective with Manan keeping it tight and accurate and Rahul bowling his quick seam up pace. Both players recorded their maiden wickets for NCC, Rahul taking three and Manan one, which should have been two had Chris not dropped a skyer from the Rickmansworth impact player on loan from Afghanistan. The final wicket was taken with a great low catch into the broken fingers of Praveen, who didn’t even flinch.
All in all a great bowling display, restricting Rickmansworth to 121 all out.
So, to the batting. Saurabh and Dhaval opened, feeling quietly confident that 122 runs was well within the capability of the nine and a half men, and at 21/0 from 4 overs, it seemed like a stroll in the park.
Then Dhaval played a rash shot and was trapped LBW for 9. Adi seemed to have settled in on 16 before falling to the same fate, and with Saurabh slicing to point after a well constructed 30, things didn’t seem so rosy.
No need for concern. Last week’s centurion Jatin strode majestically to the wicket, surveying his kingdom like a debonair Musafa. Two balls later he was on his way back, tail between his legs. To be fair it was a wonderful catch at cover that did for him, and as Prabhu Suri says ‘cricket will humble you’.
El Capitan Mandar was on hand with yet another captain’s innings of 33 not out, constantly guiding and mentoring the ever evolving batsman, Chris, Rahul and Manan to contribute to a reasonably comfortable victory all things considered.
Three victories on the bounce. Truly an historic achievement.
