Northwood Cricket Club Friendly XI v Coaches Dads XI on Sun 01 Sep 2019 at 13:30
Northwood Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report To celebrate the year of colts cricket at Northwood, the under 15 colts challenged their coaches and dads to a game and a full afternoon time game was agreed on.

The adults batted first and the colts opened with the pace of Gurman and Ben Sargeant. Gurman soon took account of Adrian Pearce, coach Nigel Hussey and Arjun Ryatt with his pace, with Hussey having his stumps rearranged. Gurman has grown in stature this year, a good 4 inches since his arrival in March and his pace has increased considerably through some excellent work with Aussie Coach Lewis Evans. This pace was too much for all of them.

This brought seasoned campaigners Nilesh Patel and the competitive Richard Brooker together. Richard showed his competitiveness in the morning in the junior kwik cricket matches, and dismissively despatched his first balls for four. Both these two scored 50 against the pace of Gurman and Sargeant, the darts of Sabarish Ganesh and Josh brooker's medium pacers. After Nilesh and Brooker retired Jayesh Modi lasted two balls against 14 year old paceman Tyler Pearce and Sebastian Rodgers was caught and bowled by James Kenny. This brought James's dad Nick to the crease who you would have thought after many days practicing in the garden would by now pick his wrong un. However he struggled as the rest of the team and was bowled by his son. Akshit should have been LBW first ball but the umpire also couldn’t pick it so with Amey added another 10 and The Northwood seniors declared on 163. A large tea provided by the Pearces and the Modis was destroyed by the colts.

The colts opened up with Trishul and Yuv. Trishul bowled by the pace of Amey who at 16 luckily for the adults was selected for their team, another player growing in stature and when told to just bowl as quick as he can, does so accurately. Arian followed and Yuv got more confident as the game went on finally out caught and bowled by Akshit who was soon to leave for uni. He has the shots but a bit more aggression and he will get runs. The pace of senior coach Ram accounted for Jashan but this brought skipper James Kenny and Ben Sargeant together. Their time in the senior teams learning the game this season showed as they started to run the old men ragged with quick singles and the odd 4. Ben fell for the sucker punch of one of Jayesh Modi's slow turners (yes he turned one) and Kabir came and went bowled by Ruthless Ram. James soon tucked into some fare provided by his dad despatching him to the leg side boundary but the slow bowling of Nigel Hussey pulled the men back into the game taking out James Kenny. With Young Kenny gone Tyler came to the crease intent on adding to the runs and seeing the boys home but a cunning low full toss was smacked to his dad Adrian who stuck a left hand out at midwicket to catch him and dance a jig round the field. There will be weeks of rubbing that one in. The crowd in the sun by the scorebox chanted for the return of Slow left armer Jayesh from the Melton End and skipper Nick Kenny duly obliged.

Big hitting Gurman came to the crease with 25 needed but on 15 he played on to the wily old Nigel Hussey 6 needed in the last two overs, and the last pair in place Josh Brooker looked nervous as he played out a tempting offering from Jayesh and Sabarish faced Hussey needing three to win in the last over. Sab hit one up the hill to deep midwicket and the throw was a good one which, had Hussey collected the ball, he should have easily run out Brooker. However, he dropped the ball and the game as Sab hit the final ball for a single past the despairing Sydney Harbour Bridge of Akshit to win with two balls left. The game was then dissected in the bar with fathers and sons both having the bragging rights.

This was a great advert for The colts at Northwood. All 11 of the under 15s have played senior cricket with several currently well established in the each team including three established in the firsts. All the hard work is paying off. The future looks bright.
